BICYCLES FOR EDUCATION

90% of girls & 80% of boys in rural Togo do not finish secondary school (UNICEF, 2016). Many of those who do attend must walk up to 10 miles a day to get to school and then return home to complete their daily chores, fetching wood, carrying water, tending gardens, and preparing food.

Key Results from Our Program

90+% of students who received bicycles graduate high school.
10,000+ bicycles distributed to Togolese students.
70+ villages with middle/high school transportation via bicycles.
1,000s of bicycles diverted from US landfills.
Reduced gender gap in girls attendance at bicycled schools.

EYEGLASSES

In West Africa, vision impairments are a barrier to education, viable livelihoods, and to mobility and activity for the elderly. An eye exam and glasses can cost 5 months of the average annual wage.

From 2006 to 2021, we collected used eyeglasses, readers, and sunglasses. Thanks to Alaffia and their customers for collecting over 90,000 eyeglasses. We distributed over 30,000 glasses in Togo, the remainder were donated to the Lion’s Club Eyeglass Recycling program which works with Sight programs around the world.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Annual donation drives for school supplies was a project that was implemented by GACE with Alaffia to reduce barriers to education in Togo. Buying uniforms and school supplies is a large expenditure for families, which can result in many children not attending school.

In our 16-year program, over 37,500 students were provided school supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks, and uniforms. Thanks again to Alaffia customers for their participation.
